My first month on Internship in Ireland

Dia dhuit! I’m Mónica 🙂

As I finished my degree and start to plan what’s next in life and what path follow, I was a little lost, I knew I wanted to do something creative, a master’s degree, postgraduate studies or working in an advertising company, but I hadn’t opted for anything. Then I saw the Erasmus + grant, which offers the chance to participate in an internship related to your studies in another country and I asked myself, why not? I needed to improve my English and a work experience in foreign country is always good for your CV. So here I am, in Cork, working on Digital Marketing and sharing an apartment with my crazy flatmate, Miren.

You may wonder why Cork? I had never been to Ireland but had friends who had spoken highly of it, plus for me it was the most attractive English-speaking the city that we were offered. The landscape and climate are a bit like the Basque Country, so it hasn’t been as big a change as if I coming from the south of Spain.

Regarding work, it’s great – good atmosphere. I had previously worked in Digital Marketing, but to do it in another country gives you a different view. Speaking English all the time is hard, but slowly I’m talking fluently. It is what I have to do because I am working with French and Irish people, and English is our common language. It is the best way to communicate!

How is life without my parents? Well, I’m tired of scrubbing and I am too lazy to cook elaborate meals, but otherwise, it is good! I have more freedom to do whatever I want, like going out late midweek without my mother’s permission. I hate to go grocery shopping, we go to Tesco, Lidl or Dunnes. A good way to save, is to look at the offers, there are products that are about to expire and sometimes you save more than 50%, but of course you have to eat them the same day.

When I have free time I like to walk the streets of Cork, see its buildings, the River Lee with its bridges, the large number of street art there is throughout the city, enjoy a lot of street singers and discover magic corners. And given the chance, I like to try new food and drinks, and being in Ireland I try not to ask for the same beer twice, I love Beamish.

I enjoy visiting other places. I like photography, so for me it’s inspiring to see new places. Here we have many beautiful  locations nearby, like Blarney Castle, Cobh and Kinsale, which are nice to spend the afternoon. And if you want to spend a whole day or a weekend away I will be visiting: Galway, Cliffs of Moher and Dingle.

And when this is over what? I plan to apply for a job in Spain, I would like to do postgraduate studies of Art Direction or Graphic Design while I work. Because in the future I see myself working in an Advertising Agency. But now I enjoy Ireland!
That’s all folks!!
